On the second of two headlining nights at DC’s 9:30 Club, Matt Nathanson stuck to his proposed list - for the most part. On his blog, he posts lists of each night’s performed songs after the fact, so you can see that he dropped in the James track “Laid” just after “Princess,” and traded off “Kept” for a cover of Violent Femmes’ “Blister in the Sun.” And neither list conveys all the musical detours in a night that included bits of Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl,” Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” (tucked into “Queen of (K)nots,” with which it shares a distinctive beat) and some very funny Barry White-style vocal vamping over the sexy soul improvisation of his band.
A typical fun night out with Matt Nathanson.
